The Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce is disappointed that Canada and the United States were unable to reach an agreement following the three-day extension of trade negotiations. We understand the federal government's position that the terms on the table were not acceptable and that Canada cannot agree to a deal that places Canadian businesses and workers at an unreasonable competitive disadvantage.
At the same time, continued uncertainty is a significant concern for our business community. Sault Ste. Marie has a strong connection to North American trade, with key sectors including steel, manufacturing, forestry and transportation directly or indirectly affected by trade conditions. Locally, some of our largest employers have already been dealing with significant tariffs and disruption to established North American supply chains. We should not underestimate the broader impact that continued uncertainty can have on investment, employment and business confidence.
As such, we support the need for Canada to continue pursuing negotiations with the United States. Our two countries have deeply integrated economies and businesses on both sides of the border have a shared interest in restoring a stable, predictable and mutually beneficial trading relationship.
The Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce is calling for continued negotiations toward a durable trade agreement, targeted support for businesses and workers affected by tariffs, and recognition of the strategic importance of Canadian steel and other trade-exposed industries.
We also support efforts to strengthen Canada's domestic economy by reducing interprovincial trade barriers, investing in trade infrastructure and diversifying export markets.
In the meantime, we all have a role to play. We need to support Canadian businesses with our wallets — buying Canadian products and services whenever we can, supporting local businesses and choosing to vacation and travel in Canada. Every purchase is a choice, and collectively, those choices have real economic power.
For Sault Ste. Marie, diversification should not mean turning our back on the United States. It means building greater resilience while continuing to work toward a strong and stable relationship with our largest trading partner.
