Committees & Mandates


Membership Committee

The mandate of this committee is to develop and implement effective and valuable membership programs, events and services that will attract, retain, educate, engage and increase participation of the Chamber membership.

This committee identifies opportunities to improve existing and/or develop new Chamber Programs and Services that offer benefits and value to the Chamber membership and generate new sources of revenue for the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce

Advocacy Committee

Advocacy is the cornerstone of the Chamber of Commerce movement.  The Chamber, provincially and nationally, has significant influence over public policy through the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.  The process for advocacy engagement will vary depending up the scope of the issue, whether or not the issue is a recurring, the resources required to formulate a position and the time available for a response.
 
The Advocacy Team will be responsible for conducting research on the issues directed to it and formulating a position for the Board to consider.  The Advocacy Team shall also assist with providing recommendations for key communication messages.  The Advocacy Team shall also utilize the resources of the Canadian and Ontario Chambers of Commerce in its research on local issues.
 
Government Relations Committee
 
The mandate of this committee is to enable legislation which helps build a strong community and business economic base.  To achieve this, the committee enhances the Chamber’s lobbying function in selective and strategic areas on behalf of members and improves relationships with government, business agencies and labour organizations.

This committee meets 3-4 times per year and works to support the efforts of the Chamber’s Advocacy Committee.

Business Development & Education Committee
 
The mandate of this committee is to provide leadership in uniting Chamber members with community and other groups and to inform, engage and facilitate access to business development and education for Chamber member’s needs. 
 
This committee identifies opportunities to provide and deliver educational workshops/breakfast events to members.
 
Marketing & Communications Committee
 
The mandate of this committee is to develop the process and tools to enable efficient and effective communications for the Chamber and to develop a mechanism for Chamber committees to solicit and gain feedback from the Marketing & Communications Committee.
 
This committee also works to drive a digital strategy for the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce.
 
Finance Committee
 
The mandate of this committee is to achieve a diversified financial base which is not totally dependent on membership dues, while providing the level of services the Chamber members require.  The Chamber’s Finance Committee monitors the ongoing financial management and reporting of the Chamber on behalf of its members.
 
Chamber Great Events & Programs Task Forces
 
As required, the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber establishes a number of task forces to plan, organize and implement various chamber events and programs.  These include, but are not limited to, the Spring Expo Committee, Awards Task Force, Curling Bonspiel Task Force & Health & Wellness Expo.
 
STRIVE Young Professionals Group
 
This group was formed as a sub-committee of the Chamber in 2012 in an effort to acknowledge and serve this demographic.  They work with the Chamber to achieve their mission of assisting professionals in reaching higher potential through community development, networking events, training opportunities and recognizing achievement for the purpose of attraction and retention in the community.
